Description
The Kurma avatara is also known as the ‘Kachhapa avatara’ (incarnation in the form of a tortoise). To lift the Mandar Parvat during the Samudra Manthan, the world needed something that could not be submerged in water even if it was solid. In this Lord Vishnu took the form of a tortoise and lifted the huge Mandarachal mountain on his back. The churning of the ocean was possible only after this.
